… starts today. As a kickoff, the Allawi provisional government has announced that Allawi’s party will hold their convention in Fallujah. This will help start the healing process, following the razing of the city. The utter destruction of Fallujah was, according to Allawi, carried out so that any residents who cared to remain there can participate in Iraq’s first free elections.
The Iraqi and American troops are under strict orders to use only small arms fire on insurgents holed up in the city’s major mosque, as the facilities will be required for the convention delegates in sevral weeks time.

the most insightful commentary about the state of affairs before the election did indeed come from Ed Helms of the Daily Show, who raised the rather obvious but overlooked point of how does one run any kind of election campaign during a period of martial law.

What is getting someone elected there going to solve. US is in control now and we havnt solved anything except rebuild the crap that was already there to begin with. I say elected people get blown up the first chance they get, not that i would like to see that happen but what do they expect, that insurgents are suddenly going to stop fighting when this election is finished? If i remember right they had a govt already but it was currupted. Wonder how long this one will last.

I agree with you … it’ll probably just wind things tighter, dig curent holes deeper. It must be transparent to evrybody that puppet regimes and elections in the middle of widespread violence and unrest just is another peg in the ground by the US.
This is what will keep happening until others stand up to the US - somehow … could be economic, joint action by China and India or something - who knows, except that it’s highly likely to get uglier and uglier.
