Colin Powell Just Resigned

He surprised all sorts of people during the past three years by remaining on a team, and accepting and justifying that team’s actions, like the bum-boy he has become.

I used to admire him, somewhat … I don’t now. Had he anything resembling principles, he would have resigned about 2 years ago. Now he can sit on the sidelines and watch unfold the genocide he helped to implement.

Powell has always been a loyal officer and a fairly competent commander. I intend neither description to be a compliment. He was also the most grown up member of the Bush regime and that’s probably why he hung on to his job for so long. Someone had to keep on eye on the nepotism beneficiaries. From what he wrote in his autobiography, it’s safe to say he despised the chickenhawks. Working for Bush the Lesser can’t have been easy.

I agree. I have some empathy, still, for him (esp. because I often get stopped on the street by people … I kid you not … and get asked “Do you know you look just like Colin Powell ?”). I’m a fairly big guy, as well, tho’ I think not as big as him.

That said, I believe … strongly … he would have served his country and the American people better had he resigned ayear or so ago, and become a public figure speaking out against the atrocities and idiocy being carried out in the name of the American people. He could have made history.

Okay, Bush is mad, demented. Literally.

Powell knows this.

Would he receive some sort of immunity if he now became THE whistleblower.

Is Powell just going to disappear? At some point someone high up the chain is going to turn witness.

If not him, then…

I forgot to add that Powell was the point man for the My Lai cover up. That’s why my use of “loyal” is not intended to be a compliment.

I doubt he’ll be the one to sing.

What perturbs me … a lot … is that there are probably lots of at least semi-sane people who MUST wonder, after the last 2+ years … after invading on pretext, after Chalabi, after Plame, after the 9/11 Commission Report, after Abu Ghraib … about all that’s going on. I mean “insurgents” ? Insurging against what … being invaded by a brutal foreign power … would you insurge?

So, just like working in a dysfunctional corporation … an Enron, a Worldcom, a Tyco … who has enough guts, enough spine, to speak out ?

What has our world come to, when so very few people speak out, or have to speak out “anonymously”, like so many bloggers do ALSO, against decisions, events and courses of action that are so very clearly anti-human. Why do so many people not speak out against someone “higher up”, just because the structures of our institutions have entrained them to protect … what ? Their pocketbooks ?

Where are peoples’ souls ? Why are they so scared to be honest, to be real, to have honour and dignity. Colin Powell “dignified” … my ass (notwithstanding Juan Cole’s most recent piece in which he suggests Powell did much more-or-less honourable work behind the scenes).

I suppos someone will sing, some day. I hope so, for all of our sakes. I would, if I were working somewhere in that snakes’ nest. My blog carries my real name.
