Judging Books By Their Covers … ?

… zipping around on the Web this morning, I took a quick look at CNN.com and saw “that” picture of Terri Schiavo.

I think that one of the great problems of our era is that many many people react at a very emotional and visceral level (which is likely where and how they take decisions) to pictures and images … without accessing and thinking critically about the supporting information underneath those pictures and images.

The television version of CNN is shamelessly showing - over and over again - a highly-edited videotape of Terri Schiavo that may make many people think that the woman is responding in very basic ways to stimuli from parents or her visitors. Unfortunately, this video does not show that up to 90% of her brain is pudding.

I agree, but perhaps it is human nature to react that way as a first response to that kind of stimuli.

Maybe because I haven’t looked or listened very hard, but I haven’t seen the mainstream media give any unbiased discussion of “persistive vegetative state” or report on any outside examination of her medical records that must have been made public from the various court proceeding records.

Much of the media without crossing that libel line has painted the husband as some kind of cad, the parents as saintly and as you said, keep showing that video in which Terri appears to be responding- going for the emotional gut reactions from the public instead of presenting unbiased facts (as usual). It isn’t surprising that the parts of the public who seldom use facts for decisions, avoid critical thinking and are the most vocal, seem to be on the side of interfering.

Sad, but not surprising.

I finally turned on the television this morning and heard CNN’s Dr. Gupta talk about the case.. even the doctors who have examined her don’t all agree, so perhaps it does merit review one more time, though I do not agree with the federal gov interfering.

The doctors who’ve examined her agree completely that her brain is irrecoverably damaged. The X-rays bear this out.

The doctors who are participating in whatever social-control scam this really is, not as doctors but as assault-team members, are using vague statements and hyperbole to frame the issue as compassion versus cruelty. That’s a lie like most everything else that comes from them.

The real issue isn’t being touched, and it won’t be, not in what passes for a public arena these days.

And then there’s this
