… in a post titled “In Our Faces”, one of the clearest and most comprehensive looks back at the consistent *big lies* (those lies that are so powerful or impactful that to challenge them one actually has to defy established authority, such as .. the Presinit).
I can only assume that given the dynamics of history, the fullness of time, and the persistence of documentation on the Web, this current chapter in America’s history will be its most ignominious, bar none. A sociopathic pathological liar at the head of the country, who unfortunately probably BELIEVES the lies he was telling, pulling and pushing the country into a murderous and illegal war, even whilst Saddam was demonstrably responding truthfully to the demands to disarm and let inspectors check things out. Even of Uncle Dick was at the controls .. actually, that makes it even worse, if possible.
Folks, it was basically all made up.
This from one of the great rational documentary blog posts (by Digby at Hullabaloo) in recent times .. an excerpt below.
While the press may find all this as hilarious as George W. Bush does, the DSMs show that Bush knew a year before the war that Saddam didn’t present a threat — and the public record shows that he knew for sure a month before the war that the inspectors hadn’t found any evidence of WMD and that Saddam had been cooperating. Indeed, one could easily conclude that he rushed to war to prevent the inspectors from making that conclusive.
And then he continued to lie with impunity for the next two years, up to this very minute, when he says he went to war as a last resort, with the support of the UN, because Saddam refused to disarm — despite the fact that we know definitively he didn’t have any arms. The press is evidently so insular and so cynical that they simply accepted that Bush was lying day in and day out to the American public in the presidential campaign. And now all we hear from the them is caterwalling about “old news.” That really is astonishing.
If you want to see Bush clumsily spinning like a top about Iraq, treat yourself to a re-reading of this debate transcript.
Perhaps if the press had done its job during the campaign, or devoted even a fraction of the energy they devoted to Gore’s mother’s dog prescriptions, or Hillary donning a Yankee cap, this utter gibberish coming from the leader of the world would have been the death knell of his presidency as it should have been. Instead, it was just a “bad performance.”
What a tragedy.
